Chapter 1: The Thirty-Five Dollars

"My Daughter Wanted to Leave Her Husband After He Drove Away in the Mercedes I Gave Them and Left Her to Find Her Own Way Home With Their Newborn—But When I Looked Inside the Diaper Bag That Night, I Found Documents Showing What Had Been Arranged Before the Baby Was Born.
"Dad, I want to leave him."
My daughter Emily said those words seven days after giving birth.
She was standing outside a subway entrance in Manhattan with newborn Grace resting against her chest, one hand gripping a diaper bag and the other holding her phone.
I pulled over immediately.
"What happened?"
Her composure vanished.
"Jason gave me thirty-five dollars and told me to take the subway home."
I looked at her.
"With a one-week-old baby?"
She nodded.
Then she gestured down the street.
"He took the G63 to dinner with his parents."
The Mercedes had been my wedding gift to both of them.
Emily was still recovering from an emergency C-section and was having difficulty walking comfortably.
Yet Jason had driven off because his mother's birthday dinner was apparently "family only."
I secured Grace in the car seat and brought Emily home with me.
She barely spoke.
That night, while she showered, I reached inside the diaper bag for Grace's clean pajamas.
My fingers brushed against some papers.
A worn manila envelope was tucked beneath the changing pad.
Emily's name was written across the front.
Inside were copies of a vehicle title, a loan application, and a document labeled Spousal Consent.
The G63's VIN appeared on every page.
So did a signature bearing my daughter's name.
But when Emily later saw the documents, she said she had no memory of signing them.
Then I noticed a handwritten note clipped to the back.
*Get her signature after delivery.
She'll be exhausted and easier to persuade.*
The handwriting looked familiar, but I knew better than to make assumptions before understanding exactly what these documents meant.
When Emily came back into the room, I placed the envelope before her.
She examined the first page and whispered, "Dad, what is this?"
"I don't know yet," I said.
But the thirty-five dollars, the subway trip, and Jason's sudden behavior no longer felt completely unrelated.
The documents raised questions about decisions involving the Mercedes that Emily apparently knew nothing about, and the dates suggested those decisions may have begun before Grace was even born.
Before reaching any conclusions, we needed to understand exactly what had happened.
And what we learned next changed the way Emily viewed her marriage.

That note was written before Grace was even born.
