Chapter 2: The Name on the Paper

My hands were shaking as I took the note from her.
It was a name.
Just one name, written in handwriting I didn't recognize.
"Emily…
what is this?"
She glanced toward the street before answering.
Like she was checking whether someone had followed her.
"That man," she said quietly, "is the reason I ran."
My chest tightened.
"Who is he?"
She didn't answer right away.
She stepped inside, just barely, and pulled the door half-closed behind her.
"He was there the night before the wedding, Dad.
He came to my hotel room." Her voice stayed flat, like she'd practiced staying calm for a long time.
"He told me if I walked down that aisle, he would h*rt someone I loved."
I stared at her.
"Why didn't you call me?
Why didn't you call the police?"
"Because he showed me a photo." She reached into her coat again.
"Of you.
Outside our house.
Taken that same morning."
The photograph was real.
I remembered that coat.
That morning.
Someone had been watching us and I never knew.
"Emily, who is this man?
How does he know our family?"
She finally looked me in the eyes.
"That's what I came back to find out.
Because I think you already know him, Dad.
I think you've known him for years."
