Chapter 1: The Morning She Smiled

My daughter vanished the night before her wedding — seven years later, she returned with a long scar stretched across one side of her face.
The day before my daughter's wedding was supposed to be one of the happiest days of our lives.
Instead, it became the day she disappeared.
Everything seemed perfect that morning.
Emily laughed as she tried on her dress one final time, hugged me before we left the bridal shop, and reminded me not to forget the old family necklace she wanted to wear down the aisle.
That was the last normal conversation we ever had.
By evening, she had stopped answering her phone.
Her fiancé assumed she was with me.
I assumed she was with him.
By midnight, the police were searching the entire town.
Her wedding dress was still hanging in the hotel suite.
Her suitcase hadn't been touched.
Her passport, wallet, and phone had all been left behind.
It was as though she'd simply vanished without a trace.
For years, I blamed myself.
Maybe I'd missed something.
Maybe she'd tried to tell me she was afraid.
Maybe the smile I'd seen that morning hadn't been real at all.
Eventually, everyone else stopped talking about her.
People moved on with their lives.
They stopped asking questions.
But I never packed up her room.
Every birthday, I still bought a small bouquet of white lilies and placed them beneath her photograph.
Seven years passed.
Then, on a rainy Tuesday evening, someone knocked on my front door.
When I opened it, my knees nearly gave out.
Emily was standing there.
Older.
Thinner.
A long scar stretched across one side of her face.
She didn't smile.
She didn't cry.
She simply looked at me for several seconds before saying the words I'd imagined hearing thousands of times.
"Dad..."
I wrapped my arms around her, terrified she'd disappear again the moment I let go.
I wanted to ask where she'd been.
Whether she was safe.
Why she'd left.
Instead, she gently stepped back.
"I don't have much time," she whispered.
Then she reached inside her yellow coat and pulled out a folded note.
"I need ONE THING from you."

What does Emily's note say — and why did she come back now, after seven years?
