Chapter 2: Something's Wrong

Emma's hand was shaking so hard she could barely hold the phone.

"I'll call you back," she whispered, and ended the call.

The room was completely still.

She looked down at the papers in her hand.

Then she looked at Ryan.

"These are my medical records.

Why does your mother have my medical records?"

Patricia took a step back.

"Emma, I was only trying to help—"

"Help?" Ryan's voice was quiet.

That was worse than shouting.

"Tell her what you asked them to look for, Mom."

Patricia said nothing.

Emma turned another page.

Her face changed.

"There's a note here.

A request." She looked up slowly.

continue."

A woman at the table gasped.

"Patricia." My voice came out barely above a whisper.

"What did you do?"

Patricia lifted her chin.

"I was protecting my son.

She was never good enough for him.

I needed to know if there was a reason for them to—"

"To what?" Emma's voice cracked.

"To lose the baby?"

Patricia didn't answer.

That silence was the answer.

Ryan stood up.

"We're done here."

But then Emma made a sound — low, sharp — and grabbed the edge of the table.

"Ryan."

He turned.

"Something's wrong."
