Chapter 1: The Question That Silenced the Room

My daughter's MIL mocked her weight at her baby shower — her husband put down his fork and asked his mother one question.
My daughter, Emma, was eight months pregnant when we threw her baby shower.
She looked beautiful.
Happy.
Until her mother-in-law, Patricia, arrived.
Patricia had always made little comments about Emma's weight, but that afternoon, she didn't even try to hide it.
When dessert was served, Emma reached for a slice of cake.
Patricia laughed loudly.
"Are you sure that's a good idea?"
The table went quiet.
Emma slowly lowered her fork.
Patricia smiled.
"I'm only saying it because someone has to.
Not all of that is baby weight."
I felt my bl00d boil.
But before I could say a word, Emma's husband, Ryan, calmly put down his fork.
He looked directly at his mother.
Then he asked one question.
"Should I tell Emma why you really paid for her prenatal appointments?"
Patricia's face went white.
"What are you talking about?"
"You know exactly what I'm talking about."
Emma stared at him.
"My appointments?
Ryan, what does she have to do with them?"
Patricia suddenly stood up.
"This is not the place."
Ryan pulled an envelope from his jacket.
"Actually, Mom, you chose the place the moment you humiliated my wife."
He slid it across the table.
Patricia grabbed for it.
But Emma got there first.
Emma frowned.
"Why is my name on this?"
Nobody moved.
Emma turned the page.
Then her hand flew to her stomach.
"Ryan...
what is this?"
Before he could answer, Emma's phone rang.
Her obstetrician.
She answered.
I watched every bit of color drain from her face.
"Yes...
I'm with my husband."

What is inside that envelope — and what did Emma's doctor just say?
