Chapter 2: Someone Was Throwing Their Body Against the Door

The pounding grew louder.

The oak door shuddered in its frame.

I crossed the altar in four steps and threw the bolt.

The door burst open.

Chloe collapsed into my arms.

Her wedding dress was torn at the shoulder.

Her hands were bound behind her with a length of white ribbon — the same ribbon from the bridal table.

A strip of fabric had been tied across her mouth.

When I pulled it free, she gasped and grabbed my jacket with both fists.

"Mark — don't let her leave.

Don't let her leave this church."

I spun around.

The woman at the altar — the one with the perfect ear — was already moving toward the side exit, her bouquet abandoned on the floor.

"Stop her!" I shouted.

Two groomsmen blocked the door.

She froze.

Chloe straightened against me, her voice shaking but clear.

"That's my sister.

My twin.

She locked me in there forty minutes ago." She looked directly at the woman.

"Tell him why, Diana.

Tell him what you needed the marriage certificate for."

Diana said nothing.

But her handbag slipped from her fingers — and a folded document slid across the marble floor toward the front pew.

An older woman in the front row picked it up slowly.

Her face went white.

"Mark," she said quietly.

"This is a property transfer.

It's dated today."
