Chapter 2: The Voice on the Phone
My fingers slipped into the hidden pocket.
Emily seized my wrist.
“Please, Mom.
You don’t understand.”
“Then explain it.”
Daniel let go of the dress.
“Emily, we should tell her.”
“No!” she cried.
“Not like this.”
I pulled out a folded envelope.
A medical laboratory logo was printed across the front, with Emily’s name beneath it.
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of test is this?”
Emily’s face went pale.
Daniel stared at the floor.
“Give it to me,” she whispered.
I opened the envelope before she could stop me.
Inside was a DNA report containing two names—Emily’s and Daniel’s.
“Why did you have a DNA test together?”
Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.
He looked at the screen and froze.
“Who is it?” I demanded.
“My mother.”
Emily shook her head.
“Don’t answer.”
But when Daniel tried to silence the call, he accidentally put it on speaker.
A woman’s frantic voice filled my hallway.
“Daniel, did you get the dress?
You cannot let Emily’s mother see that report.
If she discovers what happened between me and her husband, everything will be ruined.”
I looked at Emily.
“My husband?
What is she talking about?”
Emily began to cry.
Then Daniel finally raised his eyes to mine.
“She’s talking about why we could never get married.”
