Chapter 1: The Dress She Left Behind

My daughter left her wedding dress with me after she canceled the wedding — three months later, her ex appeared at my door for it

My daughter, Emily, canceled her wedding four days before it was supposed to happen.

I learned while she was standing in my bedroom wearing the dress I'd paid almost $3,000 for.

"I can't do it, Mom."

I just stared at her.

"What do you mean you can't do it?"

"I can't marry Daniel."

That was all she would tell me.

"Did something happen?

Did Daniel do something?"

"No."

"Then what happened?"

Emily turned away.

"I can't explain it."

That didn't make sense to me.

"Do you have any idea how much money we're going to lose?"

"I know."

"The venue.

The flowers.

The catering.

Your dress.

I paid for all of it, Emily."

"I said I know!"

"Then tell me what happened."

"I don't want to talk about it."

That made me even more upset.

"You're canceling a wedding I spent thousands of dollars on, and you don't want to talk about it?"

Emily's eyes filled with tears.

"I'm sorry."

"Sorry doesn't get any of that money back."

She reached behind herself and began unzipping the dress.

"Fine."

"What are you doing?"

She pulled it off, grabbed her clothes, and got dressed as quickly as she could.

Then she picked up the wedding dress and pushed it into my arms.

"You paid for it, right?

Then keep it."

"Emily—"

"Keep all of it.

I don't care."

She walked toward the door.

"Emily, if you walk out without explaining any of this, don't expect me to pretend everything is fine tomorrow."

She paused for a second but didn't turn around.

"I'm not asking you to."

Then she walked out.

We hardly spoke after that.

For three months, her wedding dress remained in the garment bag in my spare bedroom.

Then one Saturday morning, someone knocked at my door.

When I opened it, Daniel was standing there.

I hadn't seen him since Emily canceled the wedding.

"What are you doing here?"

"I need to get something."

I crossed my arms.

"What?"

He paused.

"Emily's wedding dress."

I actually laughed.

"You came here three months later for her wedding dress?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"I just need it."

"Please.

I don't want to argue with you."

"Then don't.

The answer is no."

"Can you please just give it to me?"

"Why do you even want your ex-fiancée's wedding dress?"

He didn't respond.

I started closing the door, but he stopped me.

"Wait."

"What?"

"I really need that dress."

The desperation in his voice made me hesitate.

"You want it that badly?

Fine."

I walked to the spare bedroom and pulled the garment bag from the door.

Daniel followed me.

I held it up.

"Here it is.

Now tell me why you need it."

He immediately reached for it.

I pulled it away.

"Not until you answer me."

Instead of answering, he grabbed the garment bag.

"Daniel, let go."

"I don't want to fight with you."

"Then tell me what's going on!"

I pulled the dress out of the bag before he could take it.

Daniel grabbed one side, and I held the other.

For a few ridiculous seconds, the two of us were literally standing in my hallway pulling Emily's wedding dress back and forth.

Then I heard a voice behind us.

"What the h*ll are you two doing?"

I froze.

Emily was standing in my doorway.

She looked at Daniel.

"I told you I'd wait in the car."

I looked from her to him.

"You came here together?"

"Mom—"

"Just give Daniel the dress."

"Why?"

"Mom, please."

And suddenly I realized they were hiding something.

I tightened my grip on the dress.

Emily grabbed the sleeve.

"Mom, stop."

"Then tell me what's going on."

As Daniel pulled the other side, I heard a faint ripping sound.

"Stop!" Emily shouted.

Part of the inner lining had torn loose.

And underneath it was a tiny pocket I'd never seen before.

There was something inside it.

I reached toward the pocket.

"Mom, don't!"

I looked at Emily.

"So that's why you sent him for the dress!"
