Chapter 2: The Boy We Never Spoke About Again

Part 2 — continued in comments ⬇️

There was no one there.
Just an empty street and the sound of a car pulling away in the distance.
Vanessa stood frozen at the gate, her hand still gripping the iron bar.
"Vanessa." My son Daniel had followed us outside.
"What's going on?"
She didn't answer him either.
I knelt down beside Mason.
"Sweetheart, what did the man look like?"
Mason thought for a second.
"Old.
Kind of like Grandpa."
The air went still.
Daniel took a slow step forward.
"What did you just say?"
"He said to give the car to you, Grandma." Mason held it out to me.
"He said you'd know what it meant."
My hands were shaking when I took it.
I did know.
That little red race car hadn't come from a store.
I'd painted it myself, twenty-three years ago.
I'd placed it on a cake just like this one — for a little boy who never got to eat it.
A boy we never talked about again after the funeral.
Daniel had gone completely white.
"Mom…
where did you get that?"
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
Hard.
"Don't," she said quietly.
"Daniel.
Don't."
He looked at her.
Something passed between them — something old, and heavy, and hidden.
"What are you not telling me?" I asked.
Neither of them spoke.

What secret have Daniel and Vanessa been hiding — and who was that man at the gate?
