Chapter 1: The Cake She Threw Away

My daughter-in-law threw away my grandson's cake because it "looked cheap" — 10 minutes later, she offered me $500 to get it back.
For my grandson Mason's tenth birthday, I baked the same chocolate cake he'd requested every year since he was five.
Nothing fancy.
Chocolate frosting, strawberries, and his name written across the top.
When I arrived at my son's house, my daughter-in-law, Vanessa, stared at the box.
"You brought that?"
She'd hired a party planner and ordered a three-tier designer cake that cost nearly $700.
"Mason asked me to make it."
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"It looks cheap."
Then, before I could stop her, she carried my cake outside and dropped it into the trash.
I was furious.
But I wasn't going to ruin Mason's birthday.
Ten minutes later, Vanessa came rushing back into the house.
"Where's your cake?"
"You threw it away."
"I need it back."
I stared at her.
She pulled five hundred-dollar bills from her purse.
"Please.
I'll give you $500.
Just get it back."
"What happened?"
Vanessa wouldn't answer.
We hurried outside.
The trash can was empty.
The cake was gone.
Vanessa's face turned white.
"Who took it?"
Then Mason appeared behind us.
"Grandma?"
He was holding a small plastic cake decoration I'd placed on top every year — a tiny red race car.
"Where did you get that?"
"A man at the gate gave it to me."
Vanessa grabbed the fence.
"What man?"
Mason pointed toward the street.
