Chapter 2: The Key He Hid Before He Said a Word

Part 2 ⬇️
My hand froze on the knife.
My daughter's smile didn't waver.
"Keep going, Mommy.
You have to see it."
I pulled the knife back and reached into the cake with my fingers.
Cold.
Hard.
Wrapped in plastic.
It was a key.
A house key — but not to our house.
There was a small paper tag tied to it.
Four words written in my husband's handwriting:
*"For your fresh start."*
My throat closed.
He hadn't just told our daughter we were divorcing.
He had planned this.
He had baked this into her surprise.
He had used our 11-year-old to hand me the key to whatever life he had already decided I was moving into — without a single word to me.
"Daddy said you'd cry happy tears," my daughter said softly.
"Are those happy tears, Mommy?"
I couldn't answer.
I set the key on the counter.
My hands were shaking.
That's when my phone buzzed.
A text from a number I didn't recognize.
*"Did she find it?
Is she ready to sign?"*
I stared at the screen.
Someone already knew.
Someone had been waiting.
And it wasn't just my husband.
