Chapter 1: The Cake That Changed Everything

My Daughter Gave Me a "Divorce Cake" Before I Knew My Husband Was Filing — What I Found Inside the Cake Made Me Gasp

I knew something was wrong when my daughter was in an unusually good mood.

Suddenly, she went from being a grumpy 11-year-old to the brightest little princess.

She told me to leave the kitchen because she was preparing a surprise for me and not to come back until she said I could.

So I went to the living room to relax and watch TV while my husband was away on yet another work trip.

An hour, maybe even two, passed before I finally heard my daughter call for me and say that the surprise was ready.

I stepped into the kitchen expecting maybe dinner or an apple pie, since she's been into baking lately.

But instead, I saw my daughter's beaming face, a huge smile, and a bright cake in her hands that said, "Congrats on the divorce, Mom."

I stopped in my tracks.

I was not getting a divorce.

I mean, I would have known if I was.

My husband and I hadn't been doing that great lately, but nothing particularly bad had happened, and he had never told me he was even thinking about divorce.

So the cake made absolutely no sense.

"What do you mean, honey?" I asked, staring at the frosting on the cake.

"Is this some kind of joke, or...?"

"No, Mommy.

Daddy told me you guys are getting divorced.

So I was just really glad that you won't have to clean up all his dirty stuff anymore, and you won't have to lock yourself in your room or hide in there while his friends come over.

And you won't have to do all the stuff that he's actually supposed to be doing.

I was just really happy about this decision of yours, and I thought I'd congratulate you because I bet it's really exciting for you."

"Exciting?"

I was speechless.

I couldn't tell my daughter that I had no idea what was going on, but I also couldn't keep a straight face because the whole situation felt ridiculous at best and like some kind of fever dream at worst.

My husband wasn't supposed to be home until that evening, so I took a picture of my daughter with her cake and decided to cut into it, hoping to cover my nervousness, anxiety, and confusion with some sugar and frosting, as we all sometimes do.

I mean, the message on the cake broke my heart, but the cake itself shouldn't have to pay the price for the frosting.

We cut into it so I could tell my daughter that she had done a great job and keep my mouth occupied for a while as I quietly planned how I was going to speak to my husband when he got home.

But as soon as I pushed the knife into the cake, I felt it hit something metal.
