Chapter 6: The Ring on My Desk

Matt stared at the ring.

“Put that back on.”

“Answer me.”

“The money covered a temporary investment loss.”

“You took eighteen thousand dollars while I was asleep.”

“It was our account.”

“My salary went into that account.”

“And I was trying to build our future.”

Emily set the ring on my desk.

The small sound it made seemed louder than his shouting.

His mother moved toward her.

“A wife stands beside her husband when business becomes difficult.”

“I’m not his wife.”

“You will be on Saturday.”

“No,” Emily said.

“I won’t.”

Matt’s face hardened.

“Cancel now and every deposit becomes your responsibility.”

Dana answered before Emily could.

“Deposits arranged with forged authorization are not her responsibility.”

His attorney touched his arm.

“Matthew, stop speaking.”

Matt shoved the chair aside.

“Everyone is acting as if I stole something.”

Daniel’s voice remained on speaker.

“The bank considers the transfer unauthorized.

Do not move any remaining funds.”

Matt reached for Emily’s phone.

She stepped behind me.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“Fixing this before you ruin us.”

“You ruined us at 2:19 this morning.”

His mother pointed toward me.

“He put those words in your mouth.”

Emily’s shoulders began to shake.

“No.

You put laughter in mine.”

She looked at me, and tears ran down her face.

“I laughed because I wanted her to approve of me.

I told myself it was easier than defending you.

Then every time I stayed quiet, she asked for something worse.”

I said nothing.

“Please say you understand,” she whispered.

“I understand why you did it.

That does not make it hurt less.”

Her breath broke.

Carla pulled her into her arms, but Emily reached for me instead.

“I made you feel ashamed in a room you paid for.”

I held her while she cried against my shirt.

“You cannot undo it today,” I said.

“But you can decide who you become tomorrow.”

Matt’s mother looked at her attorney.

“Are we expected to watch this performance?”

Richard turned on her.

“Our son took her money.”

“Our son made a mistake.”

“You taught him that taking is acceptable if you call it family.”

She stepped close to him.

“Remember whose name is on your house.”

Richard removed his wedding band.

“Both of ours.

And my attorney filed this morning to prevent either of us from moving it.”

For the first time, she had no answer.

Matt grabbed his phone and headed for the door.

Dana’s voice stopped him.

“The venue has been instructed to preserve its security footage.

Noah’s office is doing the same.”

He turned toward Carla.

“There are no cameras in the records room.”

Carla’s eyebrows rose.

“I never said where the documents were kept.”

Everyone looked at him.

His mother seized his arm and dragged him into the hallway.

Before leaving, she faced Emily.

“Tomorrow, one hundred people will hear that your father destroyed your wedding because you refused to obey him.”

Emily wiped her cheeks.

“Then I’ll tell them the truth.”

“They’ll believe the woman in the wedding dress,” she said.

“And you’ll be standing alone in one.”

That evening, a message appeared in the family group chat.

Matt’s mother announced that the ceremony would proceed as planned and claimed I was suffering a “confused emotional episode.”

Relatives began calling.

Some demanded that I restore the payments.

Others asked Emily whether I was mentally well.

At seven o’clock, the venue manager sent me the final guest list.

Matt’s mother had added two local society reporters and changed the ceremony program.

Emily read the new wording aloud.

“The bride will be escorted by her future father-in-law, Richard.”

Richard’s mouth fell open.

“I never agreed to that.”

At the bottom of the page was a handwritten note:

Keep Noah outside until the ceremony begins.

Emily folded the paper once.

“Dad, will you come with me tomorrow?”

May you like

“To the wedding?”

“To end it where they planned to humiliate you.”
