Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

At 12:17, Emily rushed into my office clutching her phone.
“You canceled my wedding?”
“No.
I declined to pay the final balances.”
Her eyes widened.
Without my payment, the venue would provide only the small ceremony room.
The caterer had reduced the order to what my deposit covered, and the photographer would no longer stay for the reception.
“You’ve humiliated me!” she cried.
I stood slowly.
“You were ashamed to have me in the photographs.
Why should I keep paying for them?”
Then Matt entered with his mother behind him.
“You gave your word,” she said coldly.
“I offered to help with Emily’s wedding—not finance my own exclusion.”
Her confident smile vanished when my phone rang.
It was the venue manager.
“Noah, we received another email after your call,” she said.
“It instructs us to ignore your changes and charge the remaining balance.”
“I sent no such email.”
Silence filled the office.
The manager continued, “It carries your electronic signature.”
I looked at the three faces across from me.
Emily seemed confused.
Matt went pale.
But his mother reached for her handbag and quietly stepped toward the door.
Then the manager said, “There’s something else in the attachment you need to see.”
