Chapter 2: The Boy at the Door

Part 2 ⬇️

It was the young man from campus.

He looked nervous.

Maybe nineteen or twenty.

Dark hair, Graham's jaw.

He was holding a folded piece of paper like he didn't know what to do with his hands.

"I'm sorry," he said.

"I told him I didn't want to do it this way."

I couldn't speak.

Harper stepped around me.

"Who are you?"

He looked past her toward Graham, who had followed us into the hallway.

"Dad—"

That one word hit me like a wall.

Graham put his hand up.

"Elaine, let me—"

"How long?" I asked.

He didn't answer.

"Graham.

How long?"

"Nineteen years."

Harper made a sound I'd never heard from her before.

The young man — this boy — looked at her with something that looked almost like guilt.

"I didn't know about you," he said quietly.

"Not until a few months ago.

I swear."

Harper turned to Graham.

"You visited him.

Every month.

You paid his tuition.

And you told me you were too busy to drive two hours to see me."

Graham's face crumpled.

"Harper—"

"Don't."

She walked back to the table, sat down, and stared at the wall.

Nobody moved.

Then the young man held out the folded paper toward me.

"He asked me to give you this.

I think...

I think there's more you don't know yet."

My hands were shaking as I reached for it.
