Chapter 1: The Question She Shouldn't Have Had to Ask

My daughter came home from college and refused to speak to her father — then she asked me, "How long have you known?"
At first, I thought Harper was just tired.
Then Graham stepped into the kitchen.
"Hey, kiddo.
How's school?"
She picked up her coffee and walked out.
I stared after her.
"What was that?"
Graham shrugged.
"You know how she gets."
But I did know my daughter.
And something was wrong.
Later, I found Harper upstairs.
"What's going on with you and your father?"
She looked at me for a long moment.
Then she asked:
"How long have you known?"
"Known what?"
She laughed bitterly.
"Never mind.
Obviously, you don't."
I sat down beside her.
"Harper.
Tell me."
It turned out she'd been asking Graham to visit her at college for months.
Every time, there was an excuse.
Too much work.
Too far to drive.
Too busy.
The last time she'd asked, he'd snapped:
"Harper, I can't drop everything whenever you want me to.
I'm working to pay for that college."
Then, a few days ago, she'd asked him to make a payment toward her tuition.
He told her he'd already done it.
Except the payment never appeared on her account.
"Maybe it takes a few days," I said.
"That's what I thought."
But something about it bothered me.
So that night, I checked our bank account.
Graham had made the payment.
Same amount.
Same university.
I sent Harper a screenshot.
The next morning, she called the student accounts office.
Twenty minutes later, she called me back.
"Mom...
they found Dad's payment."
"Then what's the problem?"
There was a pause.
"It wasn't applied to my account."
They wouldn't tell her whose account it had been applied to.
For the next few days, neither of us said anything to Graham.
Then Harper called me from campus.
"Mom."
Something in her voice frightened me.
"What happened?"
"Dad's here."
"What?"
"He's on campus."
The same man who had been "too busy" to visit his own daughter for months.
"He's with someone."
"Who?"
"A guy about my age."
At first, I thought maybe he was a student Graham knew through work.
Then Harper went quiet.
"Mom...
Dad just hugged him."
I didn't know what to say.
Neither did Harper.
My husband was secretly paying someone else's college expenses.
He somehow had time to visit campus — just never his own daughter.
And now he was hugging a young man around her age.
By then, both of us were thinking the same terrible thing.
Another family.
That day, I confronted Graham.
"Who is he?"
His face changed immediately.
"Who?"
"The boy you've apparently had time to visit at Harper's college."
He went silent.
"And whose tuition have you been paying?"
"Elaine—"
"Don't.
Harper knows too."
Graham glanced at Harper.
Then at me.
"How much do you know?"
"Apparently not nearly enough."
He rubbed his face.
"Please.
Just give me until tonight.
I'll tell you everything."
So that evening, Harper and I sat at the dining table waiting for him.
Neither of us was in the mood for excuses.
Finally, Graham walked into the room.
Harper didn't even let him sit down.
"Is he your son?"
Graham froze.
"Harper—"
"Just answer me.
Do I have a brother you've been hiding from me?"
Before Graham could answer, the doorbell rang.
All three of us looked toward the hallway.
Graham closed his eyes.
"Who is that?" I asked.
He didn't answer.
I pushed my chair back and went to the door.
Harper followed right behind me.
I opened it.
And froze.
"What are you doing here?"
