Chapter 2: The Eyes in the Photo

My husband's hand was still pressed flat on that phone.
I looked at him.
Really looked at him.
"Give me the phone," I said.
"It's nothing.
The boy is trying to cause trouble."
"Then show me."
He didn't move.
My daughter stepped forward.
"Dad.
What is on that phone?"
Silence.
The boy hadn't moved either.
He just stood near the table, watching my husband with an expression I couldn't read.
Not angry.
Not scared.
Something quieter than both.

The screen had gone dark.

My husband.
Younger, maybe fifteen years ago.
Smiling.
Standing next to a woman I didn't recognize.
And between them — a small boy, maybe four or five years old, with pale skin and dark eyes.
The boy in my dining room had those same eyes.
I looked up at my husband.
He said nothing.
My daughter made a sound behind me — something small and broken.
Then the boy spoke, his voice steady but quiet:
"I've been looking for him for three years."
---
What my husband said next left the whole room frozen.
