Chapter 1: The Boy at the Door

My daughter brought home a pale, tattooed goth boy with black eyeliner, and my husband immediately told him to leave — then the boy placed his phone on the table, and my husband went even paler.

My daughter is eighteen, and until that night, she'd never brought a boyfriend home.

So when she texted, "Please be nice.

I really like him," I promised I would.

Then the door opened.

The boy beside her was thin and pale, with long black hair, black-painted nails, tattoos on his arms, and dark eyeliner around his eyes.

He looked nervous but polite.

"Mom, Dad, this is—"

My husband stood up so fast his chair scraped across the floor.

"No."

My daughter froze.

"What?"

"He needs to leave."

I stared at him.

My husband had always taught our daughter not to judge people by appearances, so his reaction made no sense.

"Dad, you haven't even spoken to him!"

"I said leave."

The boy didn't argue.

He just stood there looking at my husband strangely.

For several uncomfortable seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then the boy reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

My daughter touched his arm.

"What are you doing?"

He didn't answer.

He tapped the screen a few times, walked to the dining table, and placed the phone faceup in front of my husband.

From where I was standing, I couldn't see what was on it.

But my husband could.

The color drained from his face.

"Put that away," he said.

The boy didn't move.

I stepped closer.

Before I could see the screen, my husband snatched the phone and flipped it facedown.

"What is going on?" I demanded.

He didn't answer.

Then the boy looked at me and said softly:

"Maybe you should ask him why he doesn't want you to see it."
