Chapter 1: She Said She'd Be Back Before Dinner

My daughter asked me to watch her kids — she disappeared for ten days and came back with a newborn in her arms.

The day my daughter dropped off my two grandchildren, she looked perfectly calm.

She kissed them both, handed me a small backpack with their clothes, and smiled.

"I'll be back before dinner."

I'd heard those words hundreds of times before.

Nothing about that morning seemed unusual.

Except...

Just before stepping into her car, she looked back at the house for several seconds.

Almost as if she was trying to memorize it.

I almost asked if everything was okay.

Instead, I waved.

That was the last time I saw her for ten days.

Dinner came.

Then midnight.

Then morning.

Her phone was off.

Her bank cards weren't used.

Her car wasn't found.

The police launched a search, but every day ended the same way.

No witnesses.

No cameras.

No clues.

Meanwhile, I was suddenly raising two frightened children who kept asking when Mommy was coming home.

I had no answer.

On the tenth day, just after sunrise, a familiar SUV pulled into my driveway.

I ran outside.

My daughter stepped out.

She looked exhausted.

Her clothes were dirty.

There was a fresh bruise on her wrist.

Then I noticed what she was holding.

A newborn baby.

My mind refused to process what I was seeing.

She had not been pregnant.

Not even close.

There was no possible explanation.

Before I could ask a single question, she looked straight into my eyes.

"Please don't ask me anything."

Then she carried the baby inside, sat on my couch, and began introducing the infant to my grandchildren as if this child had always been part of our family.

That's when I quietly walked into the kitchen and called 911.

Less than twenty minutes later, two police officers arrived.

One of them gently reached for the baby.

My daughter didn't resist.

Instead.

She smiled.

"You need to scan the ankle," she said calmly.

The officer pulled back the blanket and removed the little sock.

A second later...

...he stared at the baby's ankle, then without saying a word, he grabbed his radio.
