Chapter 2: What Was Waiting on Every Screen

Every phone in that room was showing the same thing.
The video.
Not just any video — the full, unedited footage of Ariana climbing into that dumpster while three girls laughed and pointed their cameras down at her.
But that wasn't the part that made Gregory Hale's face go white.
It was what came after the video.
Nine days of messages.
Screenshots.
Every text those girls had sent each other planning it.
Every laughing emoji.
One message that said, *"Make sure she cries before she gets out."*
And below that — emails.
Between the principal and Gregory Hale.
Dated four days ago.
Gregory's wife grabbed his arm.
"You told me you handled this."
He didn't answer her.
The principal stood up so fast his chair rolled back and hit the wall.
"Now, Sarah, I think we need to—"
"Sit down," I said.
He sat down.
I finally picked up Gregory's blank check.
I held it up so everyone could see it clearly.
Then I folded it once, slowly, and placed it back on the desk in front of him.
"I don't want your money," I said.
"I want every person in this town to know exactly what their children did to mine.
And now they will."
Gregory's jaw tightened.
"You have no idea what you just started."
"Yes," I said.
"I do."
That's when the door opened.
