Chapter 1: The Diary She Climbed In After

My daughter Ariana came home last Tuesday, trembling, her hair stuck to her neck with grease, clutching her locked diary against her chest with both arms.

"Don't call anyone," she said.

"Please.

It'll only be worse."

Three girls from her class had cornered her behind the cafeteria, pried the diary out of her hands, and thrown it into the dumpster.

Her father gave her that diary eleven weeks before he died.

His handwriting is on the first page.

She climbed in after it.

They stood at the edge and FILMED her.

I'm not the kind of mother who storms into a front office and screams at a receptionist.

I've watched other parents try it.

So I said nothing that night.

I sat at the kitchen table until two in the morning with Ariana's phone, and I got everything ready.

Nine days later, the principal finally agreed to a private meeting.

Wednesday, four o'clock, his office, all three sets of PARENTS.

He folded his hands on the desk and reminded me how generous these families have been to the school, and said we shouldn't turn a prank into a lawsuit.

Nobody offered me a chair.

One mother kept turning her wrist over to check the time.

Another leaned toward me and said she'd be happy to buy Ariana a new notebook — something nicer, honestly.

I said, "NO, thank you."

That's when Gregory Hale stood up.

He owns half the commercial property on Main Street, and his daughter was the one holding the camera.

He took out a checkbook, signed the bottom of a blank check, and slid it across the desk toward me.

"Name your PRICE to forget this happened, Sarah," he said quietly.

"But if you push this, we'll make sure your family is run out of this town.

No one will believe a single word you say."

I didn't touch the check...

I looked him straight in the eye, took a deep breath.

At that exact second, his phone, his wife's phone, the principal's phone, and EVERY other parent's phone in the room began to vibrate and ring simultaneously with relentless, frantic alerts.

What did Sarah send to all those phones at once — and what does it mean for Gregory Hale and his daughter?
