Chapter 2: The Name That Wasn't His

I looked Bryce dead in the eye, kept my voice completely steady, and said:

"That's funny.

Because the manager you claimed to know?

That's my brother.

And he's been standing behind you for the last five minutes."

Bryce's smirk vanished.

He turned around slowly.

And there was Daniel — my brother, the actual general manager of that restaurant — standing with his arms folded, looking completely unimpressed.

"Is there a problem at this table?" Daniel asked.

Bryce opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then Daniel looked at me, looked at the check sitting in front of me, and looked back at Bryce.

"Sir," he said quietly, "I'm going to need you to take that back."

The table next to us had gone completely silent.

A woman nearby had actually put her fork down.

Bryce snatched the check back, his face turning a deep shade of red.

He fumbled with his wallet, dropped his card twice, and couldn't look at anyone.

But right before he signed the receipt, I noticed something.

The name on his credit card wasn't Bryce.

It was a completely different name.

I glanced at Daniel.

He had noticed it too.
