Chapter 1: The Check He Slid Across the Table

My date bragged about his crypto portfolio all night, but slid the $200 check to me and smirked, "I don't pay for foodie calls" — my response instantly wiped the smile off his face.

I matched with Bryce on a dating app a few weeks ago.

His profile was totally normal, and our texts were pretty funny, so I agreed to meet him for dinner last night.

He specifically picked an upscale seafood place downtown.

I usually prefer keeping first dates casual, like grabbing a quick coffee, but he insisted he knew the manager there and really wanted to take me somewhere nice.

The red flags started before our drinks even arrived.

Every single time I tried to say a word about myself, he would immediately interrupt and steer the conversation right back to him.

Bryce spent the entire evening loudly bragging about his crypto portfolio, his daily "grindset," and how he was essentially semi-retired at twenty-nine.

I couldn't even get a sentence in.

I just smiled, nodded, and quietly finished my meal, counting down the minutes until I could politely excuse myself and head home.

Eventually, the waiter set the little black folder on our table.

I reached for my purse, fully intending to offer to split the $200 bill.

But before I could even get my wallet out, Bryce picked up the check, casually glanced at the total, and slid it directly across the table to me.

He leaned back in his chair, crossed his arms, and gave me this incredibly condescending smirk.

"I don't pay for foodie calls," he announced, keeping his voice just loud enough for the neighboring table to hear.

He was clearly expecting me to look humiliated, start crying, or desperately try to defend my character.

Instead, I didn't get mad at all.

I just looked right at him and delivered a completely calm, matter-of-fact response.

What I said instantly wiped that smug smile completely off his face.
