Chapter 2: You Need It More Than Me

The barbershop was completely still.

Every chair was empty.

The music was off.

The only sound was the hum of the old refrigerator in the back room.

And in the corner, sitting on the floor with his knees pulled to his chest, was a little boy I had never seen before.

Maybe six years old.

Thin.

Wearing clothes that were too small and shoes with no laces.

His head was half-shaved too.

I turned to Mr.

Lewis.

"Who is that?"

Mr.

Lewis wiped his eyes with the back of his hand.

"He came in alone about an hour before Tyler.

No parent.

No money.

Just stood at the door and asked if I could cut his hair so the kids at school would stop laughing at him."

My throat tightened.

"Tyler walked in while I was cutting his hair," Mr.

Lewis continued.

"And before I could say a word, Tyler climbed out of the chair, walked over, and told the boy to take his spot."

I looked at my son.

Tyler was staring at the floor, his cheeks red.

"He said—" Mr.

Lewis stopped, pressed his lips together, then started again.

"He said, 'You need it more than me.'"

The little boy in the corner finally looked up.

And what I saw on his face made me reach for the wall just to stay standing.

---

What happened next — and who was that little boy — is something I was not prepared for.
