Chapter 1: The Boy Who Came Home Half-Finished

My 8-year-old son came home from the barber with only HALF his hair cut—when the crying barber told me WHY, I went pale.
My eight-year-old son, Tyler, had been getting his hair cut by Mr.
Lewis since he was four, and over the years, the barbershop had become one of his favorite places.
Mr.
Lewis knew his favorite baseball team, kept grape lollipops behind the counter, and always let Tyler pick the music while he worked.
Since the shop was only three blocks away, I'd recently started letting Tyler walk there alone.
He loved feeling grown-up, and I trusted Mr.
Lewis completely.
So when Tyler came home that Saturday, I nearly dropped my coffee.
The right side of his hair was neatly trimmed, while the left was still long and untouched.
"Tyler, what happened to your hair?"
He lowered his eyes.
"Mr.
Lewis stopped."
"Why?"
Tyler only shrugged.
That immediately worried me because my son normally couldn't keep anything from me for five minutes.
I called Mr.
Lewis, expecting some simple explanation about broken clippers or an emergency at the shop.
Instead, when he answered, he was in tears.
"I'm sorry," he said, struggling to steady his voice.
"I just couldn't finish your son's haircut after what Tyler did."
My stomach tightened.
"What happened?"
There was a long pause before he whispered, "Please come here with Tyler.
There's SOMETHING here you need to see."
I grabbed my purse and headed back with Tyler.
During the three-block walk, I tried everything.
"Did somebody upset you?
Did something happen to Mr.
Lewis?
Did you ask him to stop?"
Tyler answered every question with a shake of his head or a quiet "Mom, please."
His silence frightened me more than anything Mr.
Lewis had said.
When we reached the shop, the CLOSED sign was already hanging in the window even though it wasn't yet noon.
Then Mr.
Lewis unlocked the door and quietly stepped aside.
I walked in...
and when I realized WHAT I was looking at, my legs nearly gave out.
---
What did Tyler do inside that barbershop — and what was Mr.
Lewis too heartbroken to say out loud?
