The officer knelt down so he was at Tyler's eye level.
"Son, do you know why we only call 911 for real emergencies?"
Tyler shrugged.
"Because mom said so?"
"Because someone else might really need help right now," the officer said quietly.
"And I can't be there for them because I'm here talking about ice cream."
Tyler's lip started to tremble.
Then the officer stood up and looked at me — not with amusement, but with something more serious in his eyes.
"Ma'am, would you mind if I came inside for a few minutes?"
My heart jumped.
I didn't understand why he still wanted to come in.
The situation was clearly a misunderstanding.
But something in his tone made me step aside without questioning it.
He sat down at the kitchen table.
Tyler stood in the doorway, suddenly very quiet.
"Tyler," the officer said, "has anything been bothering you lately?
Anything that made you feel like you needed help?"
I froze.
That was not a question about ice cream.
Tyler looked at the floor for a long moment.
Then he looked up at the officer and said something that made my bl00d run c0ld.
