Chapter 1: The Meanest Mom Ever

My 7-year-old called the police on me because I wouldn't let him have ice cream before dinner — when the officer showed up, I expected him to laugh it off, but what he did next left me completely stunned.

My seven-year-old son, Tyler, has always been dramatic when he doesn't get his way, but last week, he took it to a whole new level.

I was making dinner when he opened the freezer and asked for ice cream.

"After dinner," I told him.

Tyler didn't take that answer very well.

He crossed his arms, announced that I was "the meanest mom ever," and stormed out of the kitchen.

Twenty minutes later, someone knocked on the front door.

When I opened it, a police officer was standing on my porch.

"Ma'am, we got a call about a possible issue involving a child at this address.

I just need to make sure everything's okay."

My stomach dropped until Tyler appeared behind me.

"I called!

My mom is the worst!

She won't give me ice cream!"

I wanted the floor to swallow me whole.

I immediately apologized and explained what had happened, expecting the officer to laugh, give Tyler a quick talk about when it's appropriate to call 911, and leave.

The officer listened without saying a word, then looked from me to Tyler.

I expected the whole misunderstanding to be over.

Instead, his expression suddenly turned serious, and what he did next caught me completely off guard.
