Chapter 2: He Knows About the Boy

My hands were shaking so badly I could barely hold it.

"Where did you get this?" I asked.

"She gave it to me the night before she went into the hospital," the woman said.

"She made me swear I'd deliver it personally.

She said you'd need to hear it from someone who was there."

"Who are you to my daughter?"

She looked down.

"Her best friend.

Since we were fifteen."

I had never heard my daughter mention her.

Not once.

"Why did she hide you from me?"

She didn't answer right away.

She looked toward my grandson, still sitting in the car, and something in her expression broke open.

"Because of what she knew," she finally said.

"About the father."

My chest tightened.

"What about him?"

"He didn't disappear," she said quietly.

"He's been watching.

From a distance."

I stared at her.

"What does that mean?"

She nodded toward the envelope.

"Open it.

She explains everything.

But I need to warn you first."

"Warn me about what?"

She looked me straight in the eyes.

"He knows about the boy."

What this woman revealed next — and what was inside that envelope — left me unable to speak.
