Chapter 1: The Envelope She Never Sent

My 18-year-old daughter d*ed giving birth, and I raised her son alone because no one knew who the father was — 10 years later, a strange woman at her grave said, "I made your daughter a promise.
Now it's time you knew the truth."
When my daughter told me she was pregnant, she was barely eighteen.
I asked about the father more times than I can remember.
She always said the same thing.
"Mom, please.
I can handle this myself."
She wouldn't give me a name.
Wouldn't even tell me if he knew about the baby.
Then the day my grandson was born, everything changed.
There were complications during delivery.
A doctor stepped into the waiting room and said softly, "I'm so sorry.
We did everything we could."
I stared at him.
"The baby?"
"He's alive," he said.
"He's going to need you."
My daughter never came home.
My grandson did.
For ten years, it was just the two of us.
He grew into a sweet, curious boy who loved baseball, Sunday pancakes, and asking questions I couldn't answer.
Especially one.
"Grandma, who was my dad?"
All I could ever say was, "I don't know."
One afternoon, while we were visiting my daughter's grave, my grandson walked back to the car for the card he'd made.
That's when I noticed a woman standing beside the headstone.
I'd never seen her before.
"Did you know my daughter?" I asked.
She turned, and her face changed.
"You're her mother."
"Who are you?"
She glanced toward my grandson, then reached into her purse.
"I made your daughter a promise," she said.
"I was supposed to tell you the truth years ago."
She paused.
"But I couldn't."
Then she pulled out a sealed envelope.
My name was written across the front.
In my daughter's handwriting.

That envelope has been sitting in her hands for ten years.
