Chapter 2: The Letter Nobody Expected
One of the officers looked directly at Justin and said, "Son, we've been hearing about you all summer."
I stepped closer to my boy without even thinking about it.
The officer's expression hadn't changed.
Still serious.
Still unreadable.
"There's an elderly woman on Calloway Street," he continued.
"Mrs.
Patton.
Do you know her?"
Justin nodded slowly.
"Yes, sir.
I mowed her lawn a few times."
"She called the station this morning."
My stomach turned over.
I put my hand on Justin's shoulder.
"She said someone had been coming onto her property without permission," the officer said.
"Repeatedly.
All summer."
I opened my mouth but nothing came out.
Then the second officer — who had been quiet the whole time — pulled out a folded piece of paper and held it toward Justin.
"She also asked us to deliver this."
Justin took it with both hands.
His fingers were trembling slightly.
So were mine.
He unfolded it.
I leaned in to read it with him.
And then I understood why the officers had driven over in two cars.
It wasn't what I thought at all.
But what was written on that paper raised a question I hadn't even thought to ask — one that changed everything I thought I knew about Justin's summer.
