Chapter 7: The Hearing That Money Could Not Silence

The school board called an emergency public hearing.
Richard arrived beside Superintendent Blake, while Paul Voss carried a box marked CONFIDENTIAL.
Before the doors opened, Richard blocked my path.
“Walk away from your position, Elena.”
“You used Sophie to force me out.”
“You were warned years ago that ambition makes a woman neglect her family.”
“You have not changed.
You still mistake control for love.”
His face moved close to mine.
“Resign, and I will tell the custody court that Max acted alone.
Refuse, and Sophie’s name will be dragged through every newspaper in the state.”
I lifted my phone between us.
“Would you like to repeat that?”
Richard knocked it from my hand.
Mara caught it before it struck the floor.
“Thank you,” she said.
“The microphone remained active.”
Inside the meeting hall, parents filled every seat.
Emily Grant sat beside her father, and Nora Bell waited with the original folder on her lap.
Superintendent Blake opened the hearing.
“This unfortunate conflict began when Judge Elena used her office to demand special treatment.”
“No,” I said.
“It began when children were harmed and adults were paid to look away.”
Richard stood.
“That statement is defamatory.”
Nora walked to the evidence table.
“These are the reports I was ordered to alter.”
Voss opened his box.
“And these are employment warnings showing Ms.
Bell had a history of mishandling records.”
Nora’s face reddened.
Principal Ward rose from the front row.
“Those warnings are false.”
Richard turned sharply.
“Denise, sit down.”
She stepped toward the microphone.
“I created them yesterday because Superintendent Blake ordered me to.”
Blake pulled his chair back.
“You are lying to save yourself.”
Ward placed her bank statements beside Nora’s folder.
“I accepted Richard’s money.
I changed reports.
I allowed children to remain afraid because I wanted my position and the foundation funds.”
A parent shouted, “You protected him!”
“Yes,” Ward said.
“And I will spend the rest of my life knowing what that cost.”
Richard pointed at her.
“She acted alone.”
Mara played the recording from Max’s device.
Blake’s voice filled the hall.
“If Elena will not resign, we use her daughter until she does.”
The room erupted.
Blake reached for the audio controls, but Chief Grant stepped between him and the table.
“Take your hand away.”
Voss raised his voice.
“This recording has no valid chain of custody.
It may be edited, copied, or manufactured.”
Richard smiled again.
“You see, Elena?
Evidence is not the same as proof.”
Mara’s phone buzzed.
She read the message and whispered to the board attorney.
The attorney shook his head.
“The original device cannot be admitted until ownership and authentication are resolved.”
Richard turned toward the parents.
“This entire spectacle was created by an unstable woman abusing public office.”
For one terrible moment, nobody spoke.
Then the rear doors opened.
Max entered holding a small memory card between two fingers.
Camille walked beside him, and the child counselor followed.
“My game saves everything to a private account,” Max said.
“Dad only took the device.
He didn’t know about the automatic backup.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“Max, come here.”
“No.”
“I am your father.”
“You told me being sorry makes me weak.” Max placed the card in Mara’s hand.
“But you were afraid of the truth the whole time.”
Mara inserted the card into the board’s computer.
A video appeared—not from the school stairwell, but from Richard’s home office.

On the screen, Richard handed Superintendent Blake an envelope.
Then he looked directly toward Max’s forgotten gaming camera and said, “By tomorrow, every record involving those children will be gone.”
