Chapter 2: The File They Tried to Bury

Richard’s eyes moved from the seal to my face.
“You’re a judge?” he whispered.
“I’m a mother whose child is in the hospital,” I replied.
“And your son just admitted what he did.”
Richard recovered quickly.
“That proves nothing.
The stairwell cameras were offline.”
I turned to the principal.
“Is that true?”
Her hands began to shake.
“There was a technical problem.”
“Then why did you write ‘accident’ before speaking to my daughter?”
Richard slammed his palm onto the desk.
“Be careful, Elena.
That title doesn’t make you untouchable.”
“No,” I said.
“It makes me understand evidence.”
I took out my phone and made one call.
“Did you recover the stairwell recording?”
A man answered on speaker.
“Yes.
We got the evidence.”
Max’s face changed instantly.
The principal stood so fast that her chair struck the wall.
“That recording was supposed to be deleted.”
Richard slowly turned toward her.
“What did you just say?”
She covered her mouth, but it was too late.
Then the office door opened.
A frightened school secretary stepped inside holding a thick folder.
“Judge Elena,” she said, “your daughter wasn’t the first child.
Richard paid the school to bury three other complaints.”
She placed the folder in my hands.
On top was a photograph—and the child standing beside Max in it was someone I recognized.
