Chapter 2: The Car at the Curb

I couldn't speak.
I just held up the jacket with both hands, shaking.
"How did you get this?" I finally said.
"You told me he never came.
You looked me in the eye and said that."
Diane stepped back.
Her hands were trembling.
"Come inside," she whispered.
"Please."
"No." I didn't move.
"Tell me right here.
Where is my son?"
She started to cry — not soft tears, but the kind that come from somewhere deep.
The kind that look like guilt.
"He did come," she said.
"He made it to my door.
He was fine.
I swear to you, he was fine."
The ground felt like it was tilting under me.
"Then where is he?"
Diane pressed her hand to her chest.
"His father called me that afternoon.
Before Noah arrived.
He said he was coming to take him.
He said if I told you, he would—"
She stopped.
"He would what, Diane?"
She shook her head, tears running down her face.
"He had someone with him.
A woman.
And papers.
He said it was all legal.
I didn't know what to do.
I panicked.
I took Noah's clothes because they were muddy and I changed him and then—"
A car pulled slowly up to the curb behind me.
I turned.
And my whole body went cold.
