Chapter 1: The Jacket in the Dumpster

My 10-year-old son disappeared on his way to dinner at my MIL's house — weeks later, I found the clothes he had been wearing that day in her dumpster.

After my husband walked out on us without warning, his mother, Diane, was the only one I stayed close to.

She had always been kind to me, and she adored my son, Noah.

So when Noah asked to walk the six blocks to Grandma's by himself one Friday, I said yes.

"Text me when you get there," I told him, tugging his jacket closed.

He kissed my cheek and grinned.

"Mom, I'm ten, not five."

That was the last time I saw him.

At seven, I called Diane.

"How's my boy?"

There was a pause.

"What do you mean?" she asked.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

"Noah.

He's with you."

"No," she whispered.

"He never came."

I don't remember dropping the phone.

I only remember running outside in my slippers, screaming Noah's name until my throat burned.

The next few hours became a blur of porch lights, flashlights, neighbors calling his name, and officers searching the same route again and again.

Cameras, parks, alleys, friends' houses — nothing.

For weeks, I barely slept.

Then one afternoon, I walked his route again.

I had done it dozens of times.

Half a block from Diane's house, I spotted something blue hanging from her trash bin.

I froze.

Noah's jacket.

I knew it because of the crooked Spider-Man patch over the pocket — I had sewn it on myself after he ripped the fabric climbing a fence.

He had been wearing that jacket the day he disappeared.

My hands trembled as I lifted the lid.

Under the jacket were his hoodie, one sneaker, and the T-shirt he had been wearing that day.

Diane had told me he never reached her house.

So how did she have his clothes?

Terrible thoughts started racing through my mind.

I grabbed the jacket, ran to her door, and pounded until my knuckles hurt.

When Diane opened it, her face went white.

Her eyes dropped to the jacket in my hands.

"Oh God," she whispered.

Diane covered her mouth as tears filled her eyes.

"I hoped you would never find those," she said.

"I know there's no forgiveness for what I did…

but you need to know the truth."

What truth is Diane hiding — and where is Noah?
