Vance's mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water.
For the first time in years, he had nothing to say.
"Delete it," he finally hissed.
"Delete it right now."
The classmate didn't even look up.
"Already uploaded, sir."
The boy still kneeling on the floor slowly rose to his feet.
He held the broken pieces of his model against his chest and looked directly at Mr.
Vance — not with anger, not with tears.
Just a long, steady look that said everything.
That was when the lab door swung open.
The assistant principal, Mrs.
Hargrove, stepped inside.
Her phone was already in her hand.
Her expression was unreadable.
"Mr.
Vance," she said quietly.
"My office.
Now."
Vance straightened up fast, smoothing his jacket like that would fix anything.
"This is a misunderstanding.
The student failed to meet the assignment standard and I was simply—"
"I've seen the photo," she said.
She didn't raise her voice.
She didn't need to.
The classroom was completely still.
Then one of the girls near the back whispered something to the boy — something no one else could quite hear.
His face changed.
Not relief.
Something more complicated than that.
Because what she whispered wasn't about the photo.
It was about why Mr.
Vance had targeted him specifically.
