Chapter 9: A Place at the Table

Three months later, Liana entered the reopened children’s wing at St.

Anne’s.

Ruby sat upright in bed, coloring a picture while her mother adjusted the blanket.

“You came!” Ruby said.

“I promised I would.”

Ruby held up the picture.

It showed a woman in a red uniform standing beside a little boy beneath a yellow sun.

“That’s you,” Ruby explained.

“Mama said you found the missing money.”

Liana sat beside her.

“A great many people helped.”

“But you made them listen.”

Ruby’s mother touched Liana’s arm.

“The surgeon says she can go home Friday.”

Ruby grinned.

“And I’m getting a bicycle.”

“A slow bicycle,” her mother warned.

“A red one.”

Liana laughed.

“Red is a brave color.”

In the corridor, Matteo waited with Nico on his shoulders.

Jonas stood beside him in a new navy uniform.

Liana looked at the badge.

“Director of Family Safety?”

Jonas smiled.

“No locked doors with only one key.”

Matteo handed Liana a folder.

“I want you to lead the foundation’s family advocacy office.”

“I was hired to wash linens.”

“You walked into a room full of powerful men and made them say Elias’s name.”

Liana opened the folder.

The salary was more than she had ever earned, but another line held her attention.

ELIAS GRAVES EMERGENCY CARE GUARANTEE.

Her fingers stopped.

“No child waits for paperwork,” Matteo said.

“Not anymore.”

“You named it after him.”

“I wanted to ask first.”

Liana closed the folder and pressed it against her chest.

“Yes,” she whispered.

“Use his name.”

Nico reached down and patted her hair.

“Li,” he said.

Everyone went still.

Matteo lifted him from his shoulders.

“Did you hear that?”

“Li,” Nico repeated, stretching toward her.

Liana took him.

Her tears fell before she could turn away.

Leah emerged from a patient’s room and wrapped one arm around her sister.

“He chose your name,” she said.

Liana kissed Nico’s forehead.

“I thought I had nothing left to give.”

Matteo stood close enough that his shoulder touched hers.

“You gave my son peace when no one else could.”

“And he reminded me my arms weren’t empty forever.”

That evening, they gathered around the long table at the Varric estate.

Walter argued with Jonas about dessert.

Leah fed Nico small pieces of banana while Matteo poured coffee.

One chair remained empty beside Liana.

She placed Elias’s framed photograph there.

Matteo lowered his cup.

“Would you like us to move it somewhere safer?”

“No,” she said.

“He belongs at the table.”

Leah reached across and took her hand.

Nico tapped the table with his spoon.

“Li.”

Liana smiled through her tears and drew him into her lap.

Outside, the security lights came on one by one.

Inside, no door was locked, no truth was hidden, and no child’s name would ever again be reduced to a number.
