Chapter 6: The Doctor Who Signed the Lie

The elderly orderly introduced himself as Walter Price.

“I found Leah in the hospital archive,” he said.

“Someone had locked her inside.”

Leah crossed the garage, but Liana stepped back.

“Don’t ask me to forgive you yet.”

“I won’t.”

“Tell me the truth first.”

Leah looked at Nico.

“Sofia discovered Marcus was sending foundation money to five false security companies.

Dr.

Adrian Cole marked the children as treated, even when no treatment was given.”

Matteo took the recorder.

“Why did Sofia trust you?”

“I was with her after the accident.

She knew someone had tampered with her car, and she knew she might not make it.”

“Play it,” he said.

Sofia’s strained voice filled the garage.

“Matteo, if you hear this, Marcus knows I found the transfers.

Adrian Cole signed every false discharge.

Don’t trust the reports about the crash.

Protect Nico.”

The recording ended with a baby crying in the background.

Matteo lowered his head.

“She tried to tell me.”

Leah touched his arm.

“She did tell you.

Marcus made sure you never heard it.”

Walter held out a folder.

“The original payment records are still at St.

Anne’s.

Dr.

Cole ordered the archive destroyed at dawn.”

Matteo checked his watch.

“We have forty minutes.”

At the hospital, Dr.

Cole was feeding documents into an industrial shredder.

“Step away from it,” Liana said.

He turned.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“My son should be here.”

Cole pressed the stop button.

“Elias’s condition was advanced.

An operation offered no guarantee.”

“You told me funding was denied.”

“I told you what the record showed.”

Leah dropped a ledger on the table.

“The record you changed.”

Cole looked at Walter.

“You stole confidential files.”

“I preserved evidence,” Walter replied.

Cole faced Liana.

“Marcus manipulated the accounts.

I merely signed discharge summaries.”

“You signed one for Elias before he was discharged,” Liana said.

Cole’s eyes flickered.

“He was still in intensive care when you wrote that he had received surgery,” Leah added.

Cole stepped closer to Liana.

“I can compensate you.”

“Compensate me?”

“A private settlement.

A home, lifetime income, whatever number lets you move forward.”

Liana’s hand shook at her side.

“Say my son’s name.”

“This is not productive.”

“Say it.”

Cole glanced toward Matteo.

“Control your employee.”

“She doesn’t work for me,” Matteo said.

“And no one controls her.”

Liana placed Elias’s band on the ledger.

“His name was Elias Graves.”

Cole reached suddenly for the folder.

Walter blocked him, and Leah pulled the fire alarm.

Sprinklers burst overhead.

Ink ran across the pages.

Cole smiled.

“There goes your evidence.”

Jonas lifted his phone from the doorway.

“Every page was scanned before we entered.”

Cole’s smile vanished.

Police officers rushed into the archive.

The first officer looked at Cole, then pointed at Liana and Leah.

“Those are the women,” he said.

“Dr.

Cole reported them for attempted kjdnapping and theft.”

Cole straightened his wet coat.

“I told you,” he said to Liana.

“The record shows whatever we decide it shows.”

The officer closed a handcuff around Liana’s wrist.
