Chapter 4: The File He Could Not Erase

At eleven forty-five, Julian stood with me outside Room 614.

“She told you to come alone,” he said.

“I know.”

“You’re not going through that door without me.”

“If Chloe sees you, she may run.”

Julian placed his hand against the doorframe.

“Marcus just threatened your career in front of fifty witnesses.

I’m not leaving you alone with either of them.”

The door opened before I could answer.

Chloe looked past me.

“I said alone.”

“I don’t keep secrets from my husband,” I said.

Her mouth twisted.

“That must be nice.”

We entered.

A laptop sat open on the desk beside an old black ledger.

Chloe locked the door.

“Marcus created a second administrative login under Evelyn’s employee number.”

Julian moved toward the laptop.

“Show us.”

She turned the screen around.

“Every time money left the pension reserve, the system recorded Evelyn’s credentials.

Marcus kept telling me she had approved it before the divorce.”

“I had no access to Mercer Financial’s system,” I said.

“I worked for an outside compliance firm.”

“He copied your credentials during an audit.”

My hand went to the desk.

“You knew?”

“Not at first.”

“When did you learn?”

Chloe’s eyes filled.

“The night you found me in your kitchen.”

Julian went still.

I stared at her.

“You were wearing his shirt.”

“I know what you saw.”

“What else was I supposed to see?”

She closed the laptop.

“Marcus called me that night because a transfer had been rejected.

He said you were about to expose him.

Then he poured drinks and told me your marriage was already over.”

“You expect me to feel sorry for you?”

“No.

I expect you to hate me.”

“Then why are we here?”

Chloe pushed the ledger toward me.

“Because he’s moving the remaining pension money tomorrow.”

The handwritten entries matched companies I remembered from the drive.

Beside each company was an account number and a percentage.

Julian pointed to one name.

“Vance Consulting.”

Chloe nodded.

“He opened it using my maiden name.

I signed because he said it was for tax planning.”

“You benefited,” I said.

“I did.”

“People trusted that money to his company.”

“I know.”

My phone lit up on the desk.

The message contained a photograph of Emma leaving preschool that afternoon.

Beneath it were six words.

WALK AWAY, OR HER LIFE CHANGES.

The room tilted.

Julian caught my elbow before I fell against the chair.

“He knows her school,” I whispered.

Julian took the phone.

“Emma is with my sister.

Security is already there.”

“He photographed her.”

“Look at me, Evelyn.

She is safe.”

Chloe covered her mouth.

“Marcus took that picture.

He followed you last week.”

I turned on her.

“You knew he was watching my daughter?”

“I found the photograph in his desk tonight.”

“And you waited until now?”

“I was afraid!”

“So was I five years ago.” My voice broke.

“But I never helped him threaten a child.”

Chloe opened the ledger’s back cover and removed a tiny memory card.

“This contains his voice messages, account instructions, and the original transfer list.”

“Why give it to me?”

She pushed it into my palm.

“Because Emma has done nothing to deserve him.”

My knees gave way, and Julian lowered me into the chair.

I pressed my hands over my face.

“I brought him near her,” I said.

“I thought the past was finished.”

Julian crouched in front of me.

“You did not bring Marcus back.

His choices brought him here.”

“What if he reaches her?”

“He won’t.”

Chloe knelt beside the desk.

“I’ll make a statement.

I’ll say everything.”

A knock struck the door.

“Hotel security,” a man called.

“We received a report of stolen company property.”

Chloe’s face drained of color.

Then Marcus spoke from the hallway.

May you like

“Open the door, Evelyn.

The police are with me.”
