Chapter 2: The Signature That Should Not Exist

Julian’s eyes settled on Marcus.
“Mr.
Mercer.
I didn’t expect to see you here.”
Marcus forced a laugh.
“Julian, whatever Evelyn told you about our divorce has nothing to do with the acquisition.”
“I never discussed our divorce with him,” I said.
Marcus’s face tightened.
“Then why is Rhodes Capital delaying the deal?”
Julian took Emma’s shoes from his hand and calmly placed them on her feet.
“Because my compliance team found unexplained transfers in your company accounts.”
Chloe’s fingers slipped from Marcus’s arm.
“That’s impossible,” Marcus snapped.
“Those records were corrected years ago.”
I froze.
Julian looked at me, then back at Marcus.
“Corrected?” he asked.
“I never said how old they were.”
Marcus opened his mouth, but Chloe spoke first.
“You promised Evelyn never saw those accounts.”
The nearby conversations stopped.
Marcus grabbed Chloe’s wrist and hissed, “Be quiet.”
Then Julian’s phone rang.
He checked the name and put the call on speaker.
A woman’s voice filled the silence.
“Mr.
Rhodes, we found the original authorization.
It carries two signatures—Marcus Mercer’s…and Chloe Vance’s.”
Marcus stared at Chloe as she whispered, “You told me that document was gone.”
