Chapter 3: The Woman Who Wasn't Dead

The front door opened before anyone knocked.

A woman walked in.

Late sixties.

Silver hair pulled back.

She wore a plain gray coat and carried nothing except a small envelope, which she held at her side as though she had been holding it for a very long time.

Evelyn's face went white.

Not pale.

White.

The kind that comes when something you buried decides to stand up.

"Hello, Evelyn," the woman said.

Evelyn's hand found the back of the nearest chair.

"That's not possible."

"And yet." The woman looked around the kitchen slowly, as if she were checking whether the room matched a memory.

Her eyes settled on Lisa.

"You must be Lisa Bennett."

"I am," Lisa said.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Carol Mercer." She set the envelope on the kitchen counter.

"I was declared d\*ad in 2003.

The paperwork was filed by a man named Colonel Harold Voss." She paused.

"Evelyn's former commanding officer.

And her business partner."

Ryan hadn't moved.

He stood near the hallway entrance with his arms at his sides, and Lisa noticed his right hand was trembling.

"Ryan." Lisa kept her voice level.

"Did you know she was alive?"

He didn't answer.

"Ryan."

"I found out six months ago," he said finally.

"When the accounts started attracting attention."

Evelyn's voice came out sharp and low.

"Don't say another word."

"Mom—"

"I said don't."

Carol Mercer didn't raise her voice.

She simply opened the envelope and placed three documents on the counter beside it.

"These are the original transfer authorizations.

The ones that moved pension funds out of the accounts belonging to s0ldiers who d\*ed under Voss's command." She smoothed the top page with two fingers.

"My signature was forged on all three.

I've had twenty years to collect the originals."

Lisa picked up the first document.

The signature line read *Carol A.

Mercer* in ink that had faded to brown at the edges.

She looked up.

"Where have you been?"

"Careful places," Carol said.

"Waiting until someone on the inside made a mistake large enough to matter." Her gaze moved to Evelyn.

"You made several."

Evelyn straightened.

Whatever fear had crossed her face was gone now, replaced by something harder and more practiced.

"You have no standing here.

You're legally d\*ad.

Anything you present is inadmissible until a court reverses that status, which takes months.

By then—"

"By then the gala funds will have moved," Lisa said quietly.

Evelyn looked at her.

"That's what you were going to say, wasn't it?" Lisa set the document back down.

"That's why the gala had a date.

The money needed to be in motion before anyone could freeze it."

The kitchen was very quiet.

Ryan sat down heavily on the nearest stool.

He put his face in his hands.

Carol watched him without expression.

Then she looked at Lisa.

"There's one more thing you need to know.

About why your marriage was arranged.

About your brother." She paused.

"And about what he found in your office tonight before we arrived."

Lisa's phone buzzed on the counter.

She looked at the screen.

It was a message from a number she didn't recognize.

May you like

Four words.

*Don't let her leave.*
