Chapter 2: He Signed Too

Lisa didn't move from the floor right away.
She stayed there, one hand pressed flat against the cold tile, and looked up at Ryan.
He still hadn't put down his phone.
"You knew," she said.
Not a question.
Ryan finally looked at her.
"You don't understand what's involved."
"Then explain it to me."
He said nothing.
Evelyn stepped between them.
"This family existed long before you walked into it, Lisa.
And it will exist long after you're gone."
Lisa stood up slowly.
Her shoulder ached where the baton had connected.
She didn't touch it.
"The accounts, Ryan.
The ones registered to s0ldiers who d\*ed in service." Her voice was steady.
"How long has your mother been using their names?"
The color left his face.
That was answer enough.
She walked to the kitchen counter and picked up her phone.
One message was already waiting — from her investigator.
Three words.
*He signed too.*
Lisa read it twice.
Then she looked back at her husband.
"The gala was never about charity, was it?"
Ryan took one step toward her.
Then stopped.
Because headlights swept across the front window.
Someone had arrived.
And from the way Ryan's jaw tightened, it wasn't anyone he had invited.
