Those four words.

"I have a son."

The room felt like it tilted.

I pulled my hands back.

"What did you just say?"

"I was going to tell you.

I swear I was going to tell you."

"When?

At the altar?"

He reached for me again.

I stepped back.

"How old?"

He hesitated.

"Four."

Four years old.

We had been together for five.

"That woman outside—"

"She's his mother.

She found out about the wedding and came to—"

"To warn me," I said.

"She came to warn me."

He went quiet.

The knock came again.

Harder this time.

I looked at my dress.

At the flowers in my hand.

Then I thought about his grandmother's face.

The way she grabbed me.

The way she looked back, terrified, as his mother pulled her away.

She had known.

She had tried to tell me.

I walked to the door and opened it.

My mother-in-law was standing there.

She looked at my face and something shifted in her expression.

Not surprise.

Relief.

Like she was glad he had finally said it.

"How long have you known?" I asked her.

She didn't answer.

But her silence told me everything.
