Chapter 1: The Warning She Wasn't Supposed to Hear

Just before I walked down the aisle, my husband's grandmother grabbed my hand and said, "if he says those four words…

don't believe him."

Ten minutes before I was supposed to marry the man I loved, his grandmother grabbed my hand so tightly it actually hurt.

I stared at her.

"What four words?"

She opened her mouth to answer.

Then my mother-in-law appeared behind us.

"Mom.

What are you doing here?"

His grandmother immediately went quiet.

"I was talking to her."

"Well, everyone's waiting."

My MIL took her by the arm.

As she led her away, his grandmother glanced back at me.

She looked terrified.

I tried to tell myself she was confused.

Nervous.

Anything that would let me walk down that aisle without thinking about what she'd said.

Then I looked out the window.

My fiancé was supposed to be waiting for me.

Instead, he was standing near the side entrance with a woman I'd never seen before.

She was crying.

I couldn't hear everything, so I moved closer to the open door.

"You can't do this," she said.

He tried to walk away.

She grabbed his arm.

"She deserves to know."

My stomach dropped.

Know what?

I stepped outside.

The second my fiancé saw me, his face changed.

The woman immediately let go of him.

"Who's that?" I asked.

"I'll explain later."

"You're getting married to me in ten minutes.

Explain now."

The woman wiped her face.

Then looked directly at me.

For a second, I thought she was going to say something.

My fiancé stepped between us.

"Please.

Just go inside."

Someone called my name from inside.

The ceremony was about to start.

Fine.

I'd get through the wedding.

Then he was going to tell me everything.

I went back to my room.

A few minutes later, the door opened.

It was him.

"What are you doing here?

We're not supposed to see each other."

"I know."

He closed the door.

I didn't even let him start.

"Who was she?"

He rubbed his face.

"I can explain."

"Then explain."

He walked toward me and took both my hands.

I almost pulled away.

Then he looked me straight in the eyes...

...

and said just four words.

I froze.

A knock came from the other side of the door.

"It's time."

What were those four words — and what did that woman know?
