Chapter 2: What My Son Said When No One Else Could Hear

Part 2 ⬇️
Everyone went quiet.
The whole reception hall.
Two hundred people holding their breath.
David stopped in front of me and held out his hand.
"Mom," he said, loud enough for the room to hear.
"Will you dance with me?"
I felt tears prick my eyes.
I thought — maybe I'd been wrong.
Maybe he wasn't angry.
Maybe this was his way of including me, of making peace.
I took his hand.
We stepped onto the floor.
Then he leaned close and spoke quietly, just for me.
"I know what you did, Mom.
Rachel told me about the dress weeks ago.
She cried for two days."
My throat closed.
"She still wanted to marry me.
She still smiled through this whole ceremony.
She did that for me." He paused.
"I need you to understand what kind of woman she is."
I couldn't speak.
"After this dance," he said, "you're going to walk over to my wife and apologize.
In front of everyone who saw you walk in today."
The song started again.
We kept moving.
I was shaking.
Then I glanced toward Rachel — and saw she wasn't watching us.
She was looking at someone near the back of the room.
A woman I didn't recognize.
And Rachel's face had gone white all over again.
