Chapter 1: The Dress I Told Myself Was a Coincidence

I Wore A Dress Almost Identical To My Daughter-In-Law's At My Son's Wedding — During Their First Dance, I Learned A Lesson I'll Never Forget

My name is Carol, and I need to admit something I'm not proud of.

When my son David got engaged, some ugly, small part of me wasn't ready to stop being the most important woman in his life.

I told myself that wasn't the reason when I went dress shopping.

I saw a photo of his fiancée's gown on her Pinterest board months earlier, a simple ivory, floor-length silhouette with lace along the bodice.

When I found something almost identical at a boutique two towns over, I told myself it was a coincidence, that ivory was just a popular color that season.

Deep down, I think I knew exactly what I was doing.

The morning of the wedding, I noticed the whispers almost immediately.

Aunts leaning toward each other.

My sister-in-law's eyebrows going up when she saw me step in.

David's fiancée, Rachel, went pale for just a moment when she spotted me near the altar, then composed herself and said nothing.

I told myself I'd done nothing wrong.

I sat through the ceremony, smiling for photos, ignoring the tightness building in my chest.

Then came their first dance.

Halfway through the song, the DJ paused the music unexpectedly, and David let go of Rachel's hand and walked straight toward me, his expression completely unreadable.
