Chapter 2: What Was Already on the Screen

Part 2 — continued from the comments ⬇️
Before I could open my mouth, the back door swung open and Nolan walked in.
He had clearly heard everything.
He stood in the doorway, looking at his son's face — that small, crumpled expression — and then slowly looked at Chloe.
"What just happened?" he said quietly.
Chloe didn't miss a beat.
She smiled and waved her hand like it was nothing.
"The kids had their toys all over the rug.
I just asked them to tidy up.
It's not a big deal, Nolan."
My grandson looked up at his father.
He didn't say a word.
He didn't have to.
Nolan crouched down in front of him.
"Buddy.
Tell me what happened."
The little boy's lip trembled.
"She took my ship.
I was just showing Grandma."
Nolan stood back up slowly.
The look on his face had changed.
But then one of Chloe's friends — the one who had been standing there the whole time — pulled out her phone.
"Actually," she said carefully, glancing at Chloe, "I think you should see something."
Chloe's smile disappeared.
"Put that away," she said sharply.
"Right now."
But it was too late.
Nolan had already seen the screen.
What Nolan saw on that phone — and what Chloe had been hiding for months — is in the full story below.
