Chapter 1: The Rescue Ship

I watched my son's new wife loudly tell his kids from his first marriage that they were "ruining the aesthetic" of her new house — and just as I was about to respond, karma stepped in.

My son, Nolan, has two beautiful children, a nine-year-old girl and a seven-year-old boy.

Four years ago, their biological mother passed away.

She was an absolute ray of sunshine — a warm, vibrant woman who loved letting the kids build massive pillow forts in the living room.

It took Nolan a long time to heal, but six months ago, he married Chloe.

Chloe doesn't seem to have a maternal bone in her body.

Instead of trying to bond with grieving children, she treats them like inconvenient roommates.

She is completely obsessed with her pristine, all-white social media aesthetic, and recently, every trace of the kids' old, colorful life has been quietly boxed up and moved to the attic.

Last weekend, they hosted a housewarming party.

Nolan was out in the backyard with his friends.

I was seated in the living room with my grandkids.

They were sitting quietly on the floor, sharing an old tub of brightly colored Legos.

"Look, Grandma," my grandson whispered, holding up his toy.

"It's a rescue ship."

"And I made the launchpad," my granddaughter added proudly.

Before I could even answer, Chloe stepped into the room with two of her friends.

She stopped dead in her tracks, sighing heavily.

"I literally just vacuumed this rug," she muttered to her friends, not even bothering to lower her voice.

She marched right over, snatched the spaceship straight out of my grandson's hands, and nudged the launchpad apart with her foot.

"Hey!" my grandson said, his voice trembling.

"I was just showing Grandma—"

"I don't care," Chloe snapped loudly, glaring at both of them in front of everyone.

"You two need to take this plastic junk upstairs right now.

You are completely ruining the aesthetic of my house."

My grandson just froze, looking utterly defeated.

His older sister didn't argue.

She just gently pulled him close and started silently sweeping the colorful pieces back into the tub.

I set my coffee cup down on the table and stood up.

But before I could say a single word, karma stepped in.
