My hand was shaking as I pressed the phone to my ear.

"Mrs.

Callahan?

I'm calling because there's been an error."

"An error?"

"Yes.

Your results were mixed up with another patient's file.

We are so sorry.

We should never have called you with that information."

I couldn't speak.

"Your actual results came back this morning.

You're not seriously ill.

There's a minor issue we'll want to monitor, but nothing life-threatening.

Nothing like what we told you before."

The restaurant noise around me disappeared.

A few months.

I'd been living with a few months.

And it wasn't even true.

I walked back to the table.

Robert was smiling, already looking at photos of Italy on his phone.

"Everything okay?"

I sat down slowly.

"Robert…

I have to tell you something.

Something I should have told you weeks ago."

His smile faded.

"You're scaring me."

"I thought I was d*ing.

The hospital called me weeks ago and told me I had months to live.

I never told you."

The color left his face.

"What?"

"I'm okay now.

It was a mistake.

But Robert…

My voice broke.

"I only did that because I thought I was running out of time."

He stared at me.

Then something shifted in his eyes.
