Chapter 1: The Call That Changed Everything

I was sitting in my car after dropping my kids off when the hospital called.
"We have your test results.
I'm afraid it's not good news.
Your condition is serious, and unfortunately, treatment will no longer be effective."
My stomach dropped.
"What…
what does that mean?"
"I'm sorry.
You likely have less than a year.
Perhaps only a few months."
The phone slipped from my hand.
A few months.
And all I could think was:
I've spent my whole life for them…
but what about me?
That morning alone, I'd walked the dog, cleaned, done laundry, made breakfast and driven the kids to school.
I'd spent years taking care of everyone.
And apparently, I was running out of time.
When I got home, I went into the garage and found the canvases, brushes and paints I'd set aside years ago.
I'd once dreamed of becoming an artist.
Then marriage, kids and an endless list of responsibilities buried that dream.
That afternoon, my son came home.
"Mom, why didn't you come to my game?"
My daughter followed.
"And you were supposed to drive me to my tutor.
I had to go by myself!"
"I took the day off.
You're both old enough to figure things out on your own."
Then Mark asked:
"Well, what's for dinner?
I'm starving."
"I don't know.
Make something and tell me when it's ready."
"Mom!"
Something inside me snapped.
"Every day, I cook, clean, and take care of you.
Do you ever say thank you?"
The next morning, I didn't make breakfast either.
When Robert told me he couldn't manage everything alone, I finally said:
"I've done everything for years.
I can't keep living like this.
What if I was gone soon?
You'd all figure it out."
He looked startled.
"What are you talking about?
You're fine."
I looked away.
"I don't feel fine anymore."
But I still couldn't bring myself to tell him the truth.
Slowly, my family learned to take care of themselves.
And I started painting again.
I wore my favorite clothes, met friends for coffee and went hiking.
For the first time in years, I felt alive.
Then one evening, Robert took me to the restaurant where we'd had our first date.
He reached for my hand.
"Listen, I'm sorry for putting so much on you.
I didn't realize how hard it was until you stopped doing everything.
I promise you'll never have to carry that burden again."
My eyes filled with tears.
He still didn't know I might only have months left.
"Robert, I—"
He interrupted me with a grin.
"Wait!
I bought us tickets to Italy.
Two weeks.
We'll leave in a month and a half.
Mark and Ellie will stay with my parents.
You've always wanted to go."
"That's…
wonderful.
But I need to tell you something."
I was finally about to tell my husband about the diagnosis.
Then my phone buzzed.
"Sorry, I'll just be a moment."
I stepped away and answered.
It was the hospital again.
And this time, they were calling about my test results.

What did the hospital say?
