Chapter 2: What Daniel Pulled Out

Daniel didn't go inside right away.

He stood in the garage doorway, calm as I had ever seen him, and called out toward the house.

"Javier.

Come out here."

Javier appeared at the back door with a beer in his hand and a smirk on his face.

"Danny boy.

Didn't know you were coming."

"Clearly," Daniel said.

"Want to explain why my father is sleeping on concrete?"

Javier shrugged.

"Doctor's orders.

He gets confused at night.

Wanders.

It's safer out here."

"Which doctor?"

Javier's smirk held.

"You know how he is.

Getting old."

Daniel nodded slowly.

Then he said, almost gently:

"Say that again.

About the pension.

What you said before I knocked."

The smirk disappeared.

Gabriela stepped out behind Javier.

When she saw Daniel's face, she went pale.

"This isn't what it looks like," she started.

"I know exactly what it looks like," Daniel said.

He wasn't shouting.

That was the part that scared me most.

"I've been standing at that gate for eleven minutes."

Javier set his beer down.

Something shifted in his eyes.

"You don't have anything," he said quietly.

Daniel looked at him for a long moment.

Then he looked at Gabriela.

"Do you want to tell him?

Or should I?"

What Daniel pulled out next made Javier's face go white.
